Do Ticks Die in the Winter?
You may be asking why we’re posting this in the winter time. After all, ticks are only a problem in Spring and summer, right?
Over the years, I have been asked that question many times. The short answer is…No. Here’s a longer explanation:
How Many Varieties of Ticks Are in the United States?
There are over 90 species of ticks in the United States, and not one dies in the winter. They adapt to winter by burrowing beneath fallen leaves, digging into the soil, or crawling under bark. They enter a stage called diapause. It’s a common misperception that ticks hibernate or die in the winter. They do not.
How Many Varieties of Ticks Are on Long Island?
Thankfully, only three types of ticks are found on Long Island. However, they are a very dangerous trio: deer ticks (also known as black-legged ticks), lone star ticks, and American dog ticks (also known as wood ticks). All three carry a variety of diseases. The East End, as well as the rest of Long Island, has a significant Lyme disease problem, and unfortunately, more than 50% of these three Long Island species carry the disease.
When Are Ticks on Long Island Most Active?
They are active year-round but are most active in Spring, Summer, and Fall, which means tick bites are always a concern. Prevention of Lyme disease starts with not getting a tick bite. Read this guide for some helpful tips on Lyme disease prevention.
The problem isn’t only a summer issue. Ticks are active year-round when the temperature is 40 degrees or above. Weather data shows that 60% of our days are over 40 degrees on Long Island. No wonder we have a problem.
